The LCCAT is a community-led advisory panel that supports environmentally informed decision making for municipal planning. LCCAT members will have the exciting opportunity get specialized training on climate-related topics, and apply this information to their own lives as well as to Lockeport. Individuals living in Lockeport or those located outside of Lockeport who have a connection to the Town are also welcome to apply.
LCCAT members, being active members within the Shelburne County community, will naturally be highly informed of everchanging community wants and priorities. LCCAT members will have opportunities to educate their communities on upcoming opportunities through formal and informal engagements and then relay impressions to Council. This positions the LCCAT to be extremely valuable in ensuring government actions reflect the priorities of its residents. Ultimately, LCCAT members will be equipped with valuable skills and the unique ability to provide environmentally conscious input on both municipal decisions and into their own lives, having a lasting impact on their community.
The educational component is collaborative and is meant to reflect community priorities, members are encouraged to share any topic ideas they are interested in exploring. Below are some examples of LCCAT goals that can be explored, which include but are not limited to:
- Energy Mitigation Planning: Opportunities to reduce energy consumption on a municipal and community (homeowner) level. Members will be educated on existing home-energy programs (ex: community solar, loan programs) and opportunities to reduce energy use. The resulting goal of reduced energy consumption is lower operating costs.
- Community Resilience: Increasing community resilience through getting Bird Friendly Town Certifications, creating community gardens, organizing park cleanup events, maintaining integrity of community spaces (ex: Roods Head Park).
- Infrastructure Adaptation: Specialized education on existing environmental risks on critical infrastructure (ex: flooding of the Crescent Beach Causeway) and how it can impact homeowners. Teaching skills like how to read flood maps, prioritize risk, etc.
This education will be delivered by the Clean Foundation through the Town of Lockeport’s participation in Clean’s CCC program. The LCCAT will be able to support the ongoing work that the Clean Foundation is leading until the program comes to an end on March 31, 2028. This partnership will lay a strong foundation for the LCCAT, equipping members with the necessary skills to support and implement climate-conscious projects. After March 31, 2028, the LCCAT will be able to carry on pursuing climate initiatives independently.
