From the Cruiser
S/Sgt Mark MacPherson of the Shelburne RCMP, in partnership with the five elected groups in Shelburne County, are pleased to issue the first installment of “From the Cruiser”. This is a new initiative that has been in the planning for several months now and its purpose to keep residents informed of policing activities in their area. People are reminded to call the RCMP if they have a crime to report or questions related to police activity in their community. This will be a monthly update to local area residents as to what is happening in their community with such things as calls for service, persons wanted on arrest warrants, crime tips and any other topics that may arise. The first report will encompass November 1st to December 20th, so approximately two months, and then, as we move forward, it will be a monthly report.
NOTE: This report is for the Shelburne Municipality and Lockeport areas. Further reports for Shelburne Town, Barrington and Clark’s Harbour will follow. As well, specific details about certain calls cannot be included in this report due to privacy reasons and to protect investigative endeavours. The report itself will touch on certain crime types but those of a minor nature will not be explained in detail.
There were a total of 199 calls for service in the above noted time frame this year. Across the same time frame, in 2023, there were 203 calls for service.
Assault: There were 2 reported assaults of which arrests and charges were made in one while in the other incident, the complainant declined to proceed with charges. This is up from 1 the previous year
Break and Enter: There were 6 reported Break and Enters in the county. This is up from 3 the previous year. They are as follows:
- Break in the Ingomar area was the result of youths entering a cottage and causing some minor damage and drinking some liquor. Resolving through Alternative Measures.
- Possible Break/Damage to Property in Jordan Branch where suspect appears to have entered onto the property and rummaged through some trailers. One window broken but nothing reported taken.
- Break into a barn in the Roseway area with door lock having been broken. Nothing taken
- Break into a seasonal/historic family home in Lower Ohio where the residence, which is unoccupied, was rummaged through but nothing appears taken.
- Break into a residence in Birchtown area whereby house was damaged by thieves throwing items about. Approx $4000 dollars missing.
- Break into the old Boys School where suspects gained entry and caused damage to a door but nothing reported taken.
NOTE: Last week S/Sgt MacPherson issued some tips/advice in securing and protecting your property and vehicles. As noted at that time, most thefts are crimes of opportunity and better security measures and lighting are a great deterrent to persons looking to take your property.
Sudden Deaths: There were two reported deaths in this time frame with Medical Examiner ruling both due to medical reasons.
Mental Health Act: There were 12 calls for people in crisis. Most often these calls require RCMP and EHS attendance. This is up from 6 the previous year.
Damage to Property/Mischief: There were two reported incidents of which both involved persons who knew each other. This is down from 5 the previous year.
Damage to Property/Obstruction of Enjoyment: There were only two incidents reported in the county with both involving unwanted persons and liquor consumption. This is down from 3 the previous year.
Motor Vehicle Related: There were 38 calls for service involving Motor Vehicle infractions. These include speeding complaints, erratic driving and impaired driving. This is down from 55 the previous year.
Traffic Collision: There were 9 motor vehicle collisions reported including a very serious incident at Exit 26 on December 18th. This is down from 16 the previous year.
NOTE: Motor Vehicle related incidents remain the biggest threat to people’s lives and property. At this time of year, the best investment a person can make is in ensuring your vehicle is properly safety inspected and has good tires. As well, people need to be mindful of their driving habits and to not speed, follow to closely or drive while impaired by drug/alcohol. RCMP will be increasing Check Points throughout the holiday season and ask drivers to be responsible.
Sex Assault: None Reported. This is down from 2 reported the previous year during this time frame.
Impaired Driving: Two drivers were apprehended/charged for impaired driving over the past two months with two other investigations ongoing and awaiting blood testing to determine charges. This is up from 1 the previous year.
Theft from Vehicle: There was one reported theft of items from a vehicle in the Port Saxon area. Items from this theft have been recovered in two other incidents. One being a collision on Hwy 103 and the other during the recovery of a stolen vehicle and warrant execution by RCMP on December 2nd.
Theft of Vehicles: There were three stolen vehicles in this time period. This is down from 4 the previous year.
- Truck stolen from Birchtown area and recovered by RCMP in Barrington the following night. Suspects identified.
- SUV stolen from Ingomar area and recovered by RCMP the next day with help from owner. Suspects fled scene and tracked by RCMP Dog Services. One suspect arrested in residence in Sandy Point, other suspect fled area by being picked up by associate. One suspect remains on remand, other suspect is still at large but identity is known. The same suspects are believed to have taken the vehicle noted above from Birchtown. Investigations ongoing
- Theft of a vehicle by a family member and vehicle returned.
Suspicious Person/Vehicle: There were seven reported files of this type. This is up from 4 the previous year.
- Report of a tractor trailer parked on someone’s property and unknown who left it there. No criminality.
- Report of speeding vehicle in Jordan Bay area. No criminality as a result and vehicle located at neighbours. This is part of a larger investigation.
- Report of suspicious vehicle parked along the highway in Birchtown. Patrol made and checks completed and everything in order. Nothing criminal.
- Report of suspicious vehicle pulling into a driveway in Port Saxon. Silver Dodge Caravan with male and female occupants. Vehicle departed and no further criminality reported in area. Caller reports concern relating to local drug activity.
- Report of male hitch hiking along roadway and possibly involved in a vehicle that was in the ditch nearby. Ongoing investigation.
Well Being Checks: There were 6 calls for RCMP officers to check on persons suffering from health issues or who are vulnerable. This is up from 1 the previous year
Illicit Drug Investigations: These cannot be listed here but anyone who has information or concerns on drug activity in their area are asked to call the Shelburne RCMP and ask to speak with the Street Crime Enforcement Unit. If you wish to remain anonymous, that is okay.
All other calls for service were for such things as; animal related calls, crime prevention, family court orders, service of documents, assist other agencies, false alarms, 911 calls, fail to comply with court orders and numerous other calls that were deemed to be either unfounded or non criminal. These are too numerous to mention and do not involve criminal charges.
Warrants of Arrest:
NOTE: When a person is formally charged with an offence, their name can be released and is accessible to the public. Similarly, when an arrest warrant is issued by the court, that person’s name can be released to the public in order to assist the police in locating and arresting the accused.

Citizens on Patrol (COP): Shelburne RCMP are continuing to work towards building a COP group. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer who will assist police in your area, please email Cst Fabian Nash your contact information at This email address is being protected from spambots. Equity & Anti-Racism Plan
The Dismantling Racism and Hate Act outlines the provincial government’s approach to addressing systemic hate, inequity, and racism and requires public sector bodies to develop equity and anti-racism plans. This requires municipalities to undergo a planning process to identify actions that will promote equity and anti-racism by considering the needs of underrepresented and underserved communities. The Municipality of Shelburne, Town of Shelburne and Town of Lockeport will be partnering to develop a joint plan for Eastern Shelburne County. Consultations and planning will take place January through March, with the goal of having the plan in place for April 2025.
